PROGRAMS

Autism Treatment Services of Saskatchewan Inc., (ATSS) is an umbrella organization with a mandate to administer two distinct and separately funded business operations. These operations are comprised of the delivery of a variety of programs and services, along with Group Home administration.

Hope for Autism Program
A home-based program providing support to families with children under age 19 who have autism. Any family having a child with characteristics/diagnosis of autism or any other disability on the Pervasive Developmental Disorder spectrum may qualify for services.

The program:

  • is funded through the Saskatoon District Health Board, along with activity grants and fundraising activities.

  • provides intervention through home and community-based services designed to assist both the child and the family.

  • helps children and youth with autism to develop skills aimed at independence and socialization.

  • provides public awareness and education regarding autism.

  • provides support and pertinent information regarding autism and it's implication on family life at the crucial time of diagnosis.

  • provides consultative, educational inservices/training etc. to schools and other professionals.

  • consults to various groups and programs being offered through the ATSS. These groups for the clients with autism and their families include: parent support, sibling group, parent information nights, recreational program, social skills group etc.

  • provides recreational activities that integrate children with autism into the community.

Summer Program
Provides children with autism an  opportunity for structure and recreation for up to eight weeks during the summer. Programs are pre-planned to enhance the child's life skills, social skills and kinesthetic abilities. Activities may include riding the bus, grooming, cooking, and swimming. Depending on the child's abilities, caregivers can be provided to the level of a one-to-one ratio. Strategies for effective communication and behavior management include picture symbols, social stories, schedules, modeling and tactile strategies.

New to the program is a Speech and Language component that is delivered by contracted professionals who provide therapeutic instruction to the children.

Children's Recreational Program
Year round professionally instructed sports and recreational program which includes such activities as gymnastics, swimming, and indoor soccer for children and youth.

Adult Social Skills Club
A recreational/leisure program for adults with autism, emphasizing social skills through community-based recreational opportunities.

An Asperger's Social Group for young adults, nineteen years of age or older with Asperger's syndrome has recently been implemented. This group meets once every two weeks to participate in various recreational activities in a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere.

Teen Club
The Teen Social Club is designed for adolescents with autism/PDD, aged 12-21 years. This program provides participants with opportunities to learn and use valuable social skills in a recreational setting with their peers. As well, the youth participants have an opportunity to learn to identify and use a variety of leisure options in the community.

Group size is generally limited to 8 - 10 participants in order to maximize opportunities for interaction and learning. When demand exists, more than one group may be offered. Group facilitators will include ATSS contracted staff members, as well as volunteers as needed.

At the conclusion of the sessions, parents receive a report describing their youth's participation in the Club.

Volunteer Program
The ATSS Volunteer Program is always willing to accept new volunteers. The role of the volunteer is to be a recreation companion for a child or adult with autism and as such, provide friendship and support to that person in the community. The primary goal of the volunteer program is to encourage a person with autism to participate in integrated community recreational, social and leisure environments outside of their home and school.

Activities are recreational and geared to be enjoyable for both the volunteer and individual. These activities may include: swimming, visiting an art gallery, a walk along the Meewasin Trail, or simply an outing to a restaurant. In this kind of a relaxed situation, a person with autism can more readily participate in community activities, events and the things he or she may enjoy doing.

The family is responsible for all costs, such as meals, movies, and transportation for their family member, however not for the volunteer. The volunteer expenses are covered through the ATSS Volunteer Program.

Volunteer companions are screened, receive training and are carefully matched with a family. Families are responsible for providing feedback to volunteers regarding the individual's interests, needs, etc.

Please contact Brent Wassermann with Autism Treatment Services of Saskatchewan at (306) 665-7013 for more information regarding volunteering.
